Code as distraction

July 21, 2020

The thing about a crisis is that normal stuff goes on, but it all feels alien or even hostile (how dare the garbage get picked up like normal, can’t it see all of this?)

Suffice it to say, it’s been hard to write anything.

In part because of that, I went down the rabbit-hole of a site rebuild, this time building off NextJS instead of Gatsby, because writing code while leaving the posts alone felt less like I was ignoring all the important things.

That’s not quite ready (turns out when you try to switch away from an opinionated framework to one that’s substantially less opinionated, you have to find or build replacements for a bunch of things the opinionated framework was doing for you). But I at least have gotten past the “I can’t write about normal blog stuff, it’s irresponsible” part, so maybe I’ll warm up the last thing I was working on seriously: an examination of alternate factorings for React components that can help maintainability.

Be kind to yourself and to others.
